Every year, the Latino student organization at North Carolina State University – “Mi Familia” – Puts on a show containing the best of Hispanic heritage, culture and folklore, as well as more contemporary presentations by on and off campus bands, dance teams and performers.
The main idea of the event –Mi Familia’s biggest event of the academic year- is to honor Latin culture and diversity at North Carolina State university campus and celebrate it. Every one is welcome to this free and yearly event called throughout the years “Somos:” Somos means ‘We Are’, and every year the name is changed, from “Somos: El Cambio” (We are the Change) to the a little bit more drastic “Somos: La Revolucion” (We are the revolution). The idea of course is not to start a revolution on campus but to show the impact of Latino culture not only at NC State, but also around the country.
This year, the event took place on March 31st at the McKimmon Center and welcomed more than 200 guests to the Latino-Culture Showcase. Among the presentations there were folkloric and traditional dances from Central America by the very young Folclorico Dance Group.
Poems in Spanish and English by Raffy Chanis, an active NC State student among the Latino community on campus, lead the beginning of a very entertaining night at the McKimmon Center. Other organizations on campus also contributed to this event by performing, such as Just Cuz Crew with their modern urban show, and NC State’s Latin dance group Sube el Ritmo giving us a show of Salsa and Merengue.
More about this organization “Mi Familia”: An organization for Latino students at NC State (but not limited to, as anyone is more than welcome to join). It allows for new students on campus to meet other Latino students at NC State, as well as allows them to actively participate in Campus events throughout the semester. “Mi Familia” is part of the University Activities Board and the Multicultural Student Affairs and a good opportunity for any new student interested on being involved with an on campus organization.
